Gareth Henry joins training sessions in Malaysia to elevate his playing skills – Badminton News
Jamaica’s young shuttler, Gareth Henry, has joined training sessions in Malaysia, which is one of the top badminton countries in the world, to elevate his skills for becoming a world-class player.
Gareth, who is currently placed at the 300th position in the Men’s Singles world rankings, is confident to improve his standing soon. He was the World Number 251 player at the start of this year, but went 49 positions down as he skipped many international
events to remain focused in training.
While talking about his training in Malaysia, Gareth said, “It has been great so far... training is at a much higher level than what I was used to. But I'm in my second month and have gotten used to it.”
The 20-year-old shuttler further added, “My ranking has dropped because I have chosen to train instead of entering tournaments back to back. When I have reached a certain level, I will start to enter more tournaments and there will be improvement on my ranking
for sure.”
Gareth participated in only one international tournament in 2011, which was the Smiling Fish International Series, held in Thailand, in April. The Jamaican shuttler lost to local player, Sitthikom Thammasin, in the Men’s Singles second round by a 21-17 and
21-6 score.
About his performance in the match, Gareth said, “I would say my performance showed improvement, but I was disappointed not to go further.”
He is playing with former All England Open winner, Muhammad Hafiz Hashim, who is currently the World Number 42 in the Men’s Singles world rankings. Gareth is gaining a lot by training with the Malaysian legend and is optimistic to qualify for the 2012 London
Olympics.
The Jamaican intends to participate in more and more international tournaments after attaining a certain level of physical and mental skills. The young shuttler is confident to improve his game by working hard with Malaysian coaches and players, who are
far superior to him.
Gareth will participate in the Pan American Games, which will take place in Mexico, from October 15-20.
