Gareth Kean claims Men’s 100m back-stroke gold medal – 2011 World University Games
Gareth Kean presented an astonishing swim in the final of Men’s 100m back-stroke discipline to earn the gold medal of the event on the next day of the 2011 World University Games on Monday, August 15, in Shenzhen, China.
Kean won the title of the two-lap swim, by submitting a top finest time of 54.71 seconds. His struggle remained nearly three seconds slower than the world mark of 51.94 seconds, set by Aaron Peirsol of USA at Indianapolis, in 2009. In addition, Kean’s effort
was 2.11 seconds above the Game Record of 52.60 seconds, held by Ryosuke Irie of Japan from July, 2009.
The gold medallist was chased by Juan Miguel Rando Galvez of Spain, who remained only 0.23 seconds slower than Kean and occupied the podium for the silver medal, by submitting a time of 54.94 seconds. Similarly, Rando Galvez was trailed by Kurt Peter Bassett
of New Zealand and Sebastiano Ranfagni of Italy, who stayed only 0.27 seconds slower than their preceding swimmer and completed their swims in a same time of 55.21 seconds for bronze medal.
In the meantime, the arena witnessed the gruelling efforts of Artem Dubovskoy of Russia, who was just 0.01 seconds slower than joining the duo of bronze medallists and ended his swim in a fifth fastest time of 55.22 seconds. Dubovskoy was followed by Jan
Philip Glania of Germany, who was just 0.04 seconds behind his former finisher and completed his swim in a sixth fastest time of 55.26 seconds.
Meanwhile, Darren James Parker Murray of South Africa acquired seventh fastest spot of the discipline, as he remained only 0.09 seconds slower than Glania, by clocking a time of 55.37 seconds.  The final swimmer of the event was Sergey Makov of Russia, as
he obtained the eighth finishing spot with a timing of 55.64 seconds.
In addition, the arena was pleased with the breath-taking swims of all participants, while the winners collected their awards and accolades after the completion of the session.
