Gareth Kean conquers Men’s 50m backstroke gold – 2013 NZ Open Championships
Gareth Kean of Capital Swim Club conquered gold medal of the Men’s 50m backstroke on third day of the 2013 NZ Open Championships in Westwave Aquatic Centre, Auckland, on Tuesday, March 19.
The 21-year-old Kean showed no mercy to his opponents in the single lap backstroke discipline. With his astonishing pace, he managed to gain a prominent lead over his following swimmer and hit the wall for first position.
Kean remained half a body length ahead of his toughest swimmer and stepped on the victory stand for gold medal with an effort of 25.42 seconds for first position.
His commendable pace placed him 0.52 seconds faster from Kurt Bassett of Laser Mt Eden Swimming Club, who transpired on the finishing end for silver medal by producing an effort of 25.94 seconds.
The second fastest finisher was traced by Kurt Crosland of Neptune Swimming Club, who stayed 0.25 seconds apart and surfaced on the finishing end for bronze medal with an effort of 26.19 seconds.
Fourth fastest spot of the event was obtained by Julian Weir of Aquabladz Taranaki Swim Club, who was 1.08 seconds apart and concluded his swim in a time of 27.27 seconds.
Weir was chased by Oliver Wyeth of Capital Swim Club, who stayed only 0.12 seconds behind and posted an effort of 27.39 seconds for fifth position.
The fifth fastest swimmer was followed by Jonathan Burfield-Mills of Heretaunga Sundevils, who remained just 0.07 seconds ahead of his foregoing finisher and posted a time of 27.46 seconds for sixth place.
Seventh fastest spot of the race was obtained by Hone Scott of Napier Aquahawks, who stayed 0.35 seconds behind and made his way towards the finishing end with an effort of 27.81 seconds.
The 16-year-old Scott was followed by Jackson Cropp of North Shore Swimming, who was 0.47 seconds away from upsetting his preceding swimmer but ended up his race in last place by posting a time of 28.28 seconds.
In addition, Kean received a huge round of applause from the audience for his scintillating form while the position holders received medals at the prize ceremony of the tournament.
