Gareth Kean pockets Men’s 100m backstroke gold – 2013 NZ Open Championships
Gareth Kean of Capital Swim Club pocketed gold medal of the Men’s 100m backstroke on second day of the 2013 NZ Open Championships in Westwave Aquatic Centre, Auckland, on Monday, March 18.
The 21-year-old Kean demonstrated his astonishing pace in the 100m discipline and surfaced on wall for gold medal. With his gruelling pace, Kean showed no mercy to his opponents and emerged on the finishing end for gold medal.
Kean remained in a wonderful lead over his following swimmer and transpired on the finishing end for first position by posting a time of 53.76 seconds.
The champion was followed by Kurt Crosland of Neptune Swimming Club, who was one and a half body length behind and cruised his way towards the wall for silver medal by clocking a time of 55.07 seconds.
The third spot of the race was obtained by Kurt Bassett of Laser Mt Eden Swimming Club, who was 0.65 seconds apart and touched the wall with an effort of 55.72 seconds.
Fourth fastest spot of the race was obtained by Benjamin Gillies of North Shore Swimming, who was 0.32 seconds apart and touched the wall with an effort of 58.04 seconds.
Gillies was chased by Julian Weir of Aquabladz Taranaki Swim Club, who stayed 0.56 seconds slower from his preceding swimmer and concluded his race in a time of 58.60 seconds for fifth position.
Sixth fastest spot of the race was obtained by Oliver Wyeth of Capital Swim Club, who was 0.45 seconds apart and made his way to the finishing wall with the timing of 59.05 seconds.
Subsequently, Wyeth was followed by Corneille Coetzee of Coast Swim Club, who remained 0.09 seconds slower and proved his mettle for seventh position of the event by touching the wall with an effort of 59.14 seconds.
Eighth position of the event was secured by Jackson Cropp of North Shore Swimming, who stayed 0.01 seconds apart and tapped the wall with the timing of 59.15 seconds.
Furthermore, Kean received a huge round of applause from the audience while the position holders received medals and accolades at the victory ceremony of the race.
