Gareth Kean secures Men’s 100m butterfly gold – 2013 NZ Open Championships
Gareth Kean of Capital Swim Club secured gold medal of the Men’s 100m butterfly on last day of the 2013 NZ Open Championships in Westwave Aquatic Centre, Auckland, on Thursday, March 21.
The 21-year-old Kean showed no mercy to his opponents in the 100m discipline as he earned his way towards the finishing wall for gold medal. With his astonishing pace, he enjoyed a comfortable lead over his opponents and secured the wall for first position.
Kean enjoyed a lead of half body length over his toughest swimmer and hit the wall for gold medal with the timing of 54.69 seconds.
The champion was followed by Paul Benson of Heretaunga Sundevils, who was 0.41 seconds slower and transpired on the finishing end for silver medal with the timing of 55.10 seconds.
The second best finisher was trailed by Shaun Burnett of North Shore Swimming, who was only 0.10 seconds slower from his preceding swimmer and emerged on the finishing end with the timing of 55.20 seconds.
The bronze medallist was chased by Isaac Foote of Capital Swim Club, who was 0.64 seconds slower and surfaced on the finishing end for fourth position by posting a time of 55.84 seconds.
Fifth fastest spot of the event was obtained by Adam McDonald of Roskill Swimming Club, who was only 0.09 seconds slower from his preceding swimmer and surfaced on the finishing end with the timing of 55.93 seconds.
Sixth spot of the race was obtained by Ashley Townsend of Fairfield Swimming Club, who was 0.19 seconds behind and surfaced on the wall with the timing of 56.12 seconds.
Seventh position of the race was obtained b Fernando Castellanos of Levin Swimming Club, who stayed 0.45 seconds slower and hit the finishing end with the timing of 56.57 seconds.
Last spot of the race was obtained by Corneille Coetzee of Coast Swim Club, who stayed 1.40 seconds away from his preceding swimmer and tapped the wall with the timing of 57.97 seconds.
In addition, Kean expressed happiness over his victory in the event and collected his accolade at the prize ceremony of the tournament.
