Gareth Maybin charges Singapore with a 66 in R1
From the fields of Doagh, Northern Ireland, Gareth Maybin charges in the paddocks of Singapore to play the Barclays Singapore Open 2010. The Ballyclare player managed to display his best form after collecting 7 birdies at the R1
of the event.
According to the leader board statistics, the Maybin carded a total of 65 along with a 6 under par at the first round. The score thus achieved placed the Northern Irishman to stand only two shots behind the former leaders Chris
Wood and Kim Bi-o.
The beginning of the event faced a rather slow place as rain and lightening had hammered the grounds for a full 4 hour stint. The late starters therefore had to face the issue of completing the first round on time as they had to
play a full 18 hole spree of the $6 million event.
So yesterday’s play faced a delay that halted the first round around seven p.m. in which only 96 players out of 204 had been able to complete their game on time. The rest of golfers commenced their play today from seven thirty
in the morning.
Coming over to Maybin, he played the easier Tanjong course and was leading the Irish with Darren Clarke. The 2005 turned professional played only 28 putts in total and ended his round after leading his Irish group with a 66
Considering Graeme McDowell, he managed to card a 5 under after only playing 8 holes of the game. On the other hand, Martin Kaymer, who is currently McDowell’s biggest rival in The Race to Dubai, carded a 2 under par at the first
round after his first six holes.
At the 9th hole, the fairways were being played by Peter Lawrie whereas the hot favourite, Padraig Harrington carded a 69 with a 2 under. Harrington managed to play an amazing game that included one eagle at the 6th
hole of the Sentosa Golf Club that was achieved after the Virgo played his six-iron for the two feet.
Apart from the Eagle, the 3 time major victor also grabbed a double bogey. The inopportune incident took place at the 12th hole of the event where the ball just travelled to the out of bound area.
Coming back to Maybin, he played the Portugal Masters last month and missed the cut. He was teamed up with Reynolds at the previously stated event but stepped back into the race after appearing at the Castellon Masters. The leaderboard
placed the golfer on the 19th position that motivated him to play the next week’s game as well. The thirty year old then played the Andalucian Masters which further improved his pace and form. He achieved a tie in the leading position with McDowell
but then went on a bit high in the score to a 76 as compared to McDowell's 74.
So due to Maybin's ability to finish as a runner up three times and his new caddie Darren Reynolds, it looks like Maybin will soon become the latest Ulsterman to capture a Race to Dubai event.
He is currently playing the 13th hole of R2 and has played a total of 118 strokes till now. After carding a 66 in the previous round, Maybin is currently holding a 53 with a plus 1.
