Gareth Shaw ready for another week at the Scottish Hydro Challenge – Golf news
Gareth Shaw of Northern Ireland is relishing the opportunity to play at this week’s Scottish Hydro Challenge hosted by Macdonald Hotels and Resorts, after recording a strong finish last week at St Omer, which saw him pocketing his biggest cheque of the season.
His strong finish at the Najeti Hotels et Golfs Open presented by Neuflize OBC also allowed him to secure his place in this year’s Irish Open. According to the qualifying criteria, the top Irishman to finish in St Omer was supposed to get an exemption into
the European Tour’s event.
Because of the fact the Thornton won the event and secured his European Tour exemption card this season, the entry for the Irish Open passed on to Shaw.
Talking to the European Challenge Tour’s official website, he praised the way Thornton played on the weekend, to secure an amazing victory in the end.
“It was just great,” said Shaw. “Simon was on the brink of missing the cut on Friday but had an incredible final 45 holes and deserved his win. He played the best golf when it mattered so it’s great to see and I’ll hopefully stay in contact with him because
he’s a great contact to have.”
He also expressed his pleasure in getting a chance of playing the Najeti Hotels et Golfs Open as the first reserve and then qualifying for another European Tour event this season.
“It’s amazing how quickly things can change in your career. It was a great week overall. I went down there Tuesday as first reserve and then I got in and then made the cut and went on to finish tied 15th,” he said.
According to him, a good finish last week, added with getting a chance of playing his national open, will greatly help him in boosting his morale for this week’s tournament at the Macdonald Spey Valley Golf Club in Aviemore.
The 27-year-old, who has only missed one cut in his eight appearances this season, also believes that he is gaining momentum as time goes on and watching Thornton charging to victory has further filled him with self confidence.
