Gareth Snelgrove helps youngsters reach higher goals
Gareth Snelgrove is a PGA professional. Recently, he has been inspiring disadvantaged foster children via golf. Gareth, who is a Midland Professional, was employed to be part of Golf Foundation project in Shrewsbury.
During the project, 22 children with very complex difficulties had access to some very exciting and intriguing golf activities over the weekend.
The event took place at the PGL Shrewsbury in Boreatton Park, which also included a night of golfing activities under the stars as well.
All this is part of a new scheme called HSBC Golf Roots Plus. The idea is basically to help youngsters develop their skills through sports.
HSBC Golf Roots Plus is supported all over America, and this year they have set their aim to reach out to about 1 million children via different schools and communities.
The project not only helps children become acquainted with some initial golf technicalities, but it also enables them to learn different key aspects of life.
Any youngster, irrespective of his background, can come and be a part of this project. Skills like concentration, co-operation, honesty and perseverance are also developed in the youngsters. So that when they grow up, they know how to live a proper life.
One of the best features of HSBC Golf Roots Plus is that anybody can add funds to the program so that more number of children can benefit by this program.
Services such as youth services, local authorities, police services, apprenticeship bodies, or school partnerships, all have access to the funding. They can add to the funds at any time they want.
Gareth Snelgrove gave the children not only a group demo but one-on-one classes were also the main feature of the event, focusing on different aspects separately. Gareth was accompanied by the young volunteer’s development officer, Jason Sorrell, as well.
Sorrell said, "A major highlight was a session of 'night golf', which had the boys and girls running around and having great fun under the stars”.
"We have enjoyed great support from PGA pro Gareth Snelgrove, our young volunteers, the children's foster carers, and particularly Ian Taylor of Clifford House Fostering Services, who has used great judgment and enthusiasm for what we could achieve in the
sessions".
The event was a success. The turn out and response of the kids was encouraging. By the end of the event, everybody left the facility with happy memories, which they will cherish for years.
"I wanted three things from this: that the youngsters would get to enjoy making friends and communicating with each other, as for many of them this isn't straightforward,” said Ian Taylor.
Ian Taylor is the Training and Development Manager at Clifford House Fostering Services.
Arranging such activities for the kids will surely be a major factor in their development. Sports not only refresh one’s mind and body, but they also allows one to learn different day to day aspects of life as well.
