Gareth Thomas expected to be available for Wales upcoming Four Nations series – Rugby League
Welsh international Rugby League player, Gareth Thomas, is expected to be fit for selection in the Wales side for the upcoming 2011 Four Nations series. The Crusaders’ versatile backs player Thomas, missed out the final few round matches of their 2011 Super
League season campaign due to the arm injury.
However, the Crusaders head coach, Iestyn Harris, has expressed his confidence that Thomas will attain full fitness before Wales’ warm-up game against Ireland.
Harris added that he decided to rest Thomas for their last game of the 2011 Super League season and to avoid a pre-mature return to the game.
Harris said, “He’s maybe a week away from full fitness, it was pointless risking him for the last game of the year and him breaking down again. In the next month he'll be fully fit and he'll be ready for the training camp with Wales.”
In other news, Thomas, who was reported to be joining the Wigan Warriors as assistant coach is yet to be confirmed. Earlier, it was reported that the experienced backs players will join the warriors to start his coaching career.
The Bridgend born Thomas started his professional career in Rugby Union or 15-man code, for his hometown club. Later he played for Pontypridd before making his debut for the Cardiff Blues in 1997.
At the end of the 2001 season, he again moved back to Bridgend. Thomas later joined Celtic Warriors, Toulouse and Cardiff Blues before switching codes to join Super League outfit Crusaders at the start of the 2011 season.
Thomas has played for Ireland’s national teams for both Rugby Union and Rugby League codes. He made his international Rugby Union debut for Ireland in 1995 and played 100 games for the Irish and scored 200 points. He made his Rugby League international debut
for the Wales in 2010 and so far has made four international appearances for them.
