Gareth Widdop acknowledges that time may separate him from his dream role
While addressing a press conference on Tuesday, November 1, Gareth Widdop of England acknowledged that he may be far from booking an enviable on-field position but he is glad as long as he is playing for his country.
Expressing his feelings about the situation the player said, "I'm just happy to be in the team and play wherever, as long as I'm playing. I enjoyed it on Saturday. I played about 30 minutes and it was good to have a bit of an impact, I was quite happy with
it. I think we've still got a bit to work on. The first half on Saturday was a bit scrappy but in the second half we played really well and hopefully we can take a bit of momentum into this week. I think we've still got a bit to work on."
Widdop may have played for a brief stretch battling against the Welsh side, on Saturday, October 29, which was entirely against how he had pictured his English spell in Gillette Four Nations Campaign. However, he did end up scoring a try for his side.
The English side clearly weighed down the meager Welsh side by 42-4 but their performance was still heavily flawed. The first half of the game wrapped up at 14-0, which established an early lead for England. However, the second half saw an improved efforts
from both sides. This was especially true for England, which had picked up the momentum by scoring a total of eight tries along with five goals by the end of the clash.
England is hoping to emulate their side’s recent string of victories, with the latest 32-18 warm-up win over the French side, in their next lined up clash against Australians on Saturday at Wembley. For the Saturday night’s showdown against Kangaroos, featuring
many of his Storm fellow-players, including Cameron Smith, Widdop is keeping his fingers crossed for his inclusion. Considering that he will be playing against his usual team-mates, the player has branded it as a “massive challenge” for himself.
Meanwhile, Smith has also cautioned his side against the proven on-field brilliance of Widdop, who is expected to playing against them on Saturday.
