Rafael van der Vaart and Gareth Bale both doubtful ahead of Champions League clash with Werder Bremen
Tottenham Hotspur are on the verge of qualifying for the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League, the most prestigious club competition in Europe for the first time since 1962 (when it was known as
the European Cup). However, they may be without two of their best players, Gareth Bale and Rafael van der Vaart, ahead of a crucial Matchday 5 meeting with German club Werder Bremen on Wednesday 24 November.
While a win would guarantee their progression to the next round, a visibly stressed Harry Redknapp revealed that both the inclusion of both Bale and van der Vaart in the lineup is doubtful with van der
Vaart's condition being the most immediate concern.
"He's gone for a scan, he's got a knock just above the ankle and he's going to see how it is today," Redknapp told reporters. "It was quite sore this morning so he's struggling
a bit. Obviously he's a big loss to us. He's been in good form, but Jermain Defoe is coming back as well so that's a big bonus for us. He's trained this morning, he's fine. Robbie Keane trained this morning, so it's not too bad.
Van der Vaart has been impressive since joining Tottenham, scoring nine goals in all competitions.
Bale is currently suffering from a shoulder injury which he suffered in last weekend's 3-2 victory over North London rivals Arsenal.
"Gareth Bale will hopefully be fit, he's the only other doubt but we'll have to see how he is tomorrow as well. He has got a shoulder problem. He got a knock on Saturday and
he was quite sore this morning."
Tottenham qualified for the Champions League after finishing fourth in the English Premier League last season. Their best finish since 1990. Thus far Tottenham are tied for the lead with Inter Milan
in their Champions League group with two wins, one draw and a loss.
