  1. If it's not attached to an automatic opener, and is rising up a few inches on its' own;

    1)  The springs or cables are too short.

    2)  The springs are too strong, or if it's a twist spring it may be wound too tight.

  2. This happened to us, and there was no obstuructions w/ the sensor.  It happened to be that we needed to adjust our settings on how fast/slow the door closed. We had our door closing to fast. So on the main unit there is a little control to be able to slow the door down.

  3. Is it powered by a motor?  Does it try to go down but then stops and comes back up?  Does the light flash repeatedly when it tries to go down?

  4. If this is an automatic garage door opener, then the motor will have a safety where if it meets any resistance while the door is trying to close, it will retract the door back up.

    I would check to see if there is anything in the way of the sensors located towards the floor of the garage; also be sure to sweep and clear the entire entrance to the garage in case there is any debris holding up the works.

  5. If it's electric there may be something in the way of the sensors, or they may have become misaligned.

  6. It needs adjusting. The opener reverses the door when it's closing if it hits an obstruction. There's a little adjustment on the opener that controls how far the door goes down. If it's adjusted to lower the door too far, the opener thinks the door hit something when it get to the floor, and reverses it.
