My 10 yr old son prefers that I use garlic powder instead of fresh garlic whenever I cook garlic fried rice. Is this advisable? Does this have an effect on a growing child ? He always want to eat fried rice for breakfast.

  1. The flavour of fresh is far superior to that of powdered garlic in my view.  I would use fresh whenever possible and keep powdered one for emergencies (like when you run out of fresh). Fresh garlic also have a  long shelf life.

I am not aware of any adverse effect of the powdered form on a growing child and I cannot say whether it has any effect or not, but fresh garlic do have beneficial effect on everyone and is reputed to have anti-bacterial and other health benefits. It also helps to ward off coughs and colds.

If the kid wants to have fried rice for breakfast, let him.  It is better to have fried rice than go without breakfast (like mine does).  It is nutritious  and it certainly won't do him any harm.

Have a look at the couple of sources below

  2. Rice is the most popular and widely eaten food on the planet. Powdered garlic, while not as healthful as fresh, should be fine. I prefer powdered over fresh or packaged for garlic butter or garlic toast. Your son probably likes the powdered because it's much finer and milder than the other.

  3. Well the fresh vegetable will always be better than the dried/processed one as it has more nutrients.

  4. I think you should try and use fresh as much as possible. I have a friend who swears by "a clove a day keeps the doctor away" and it seems to work, he is never ill.

  5. no powdered has just been dried out and has a longer shelf life then fresh it won't do any harm

  6. Garlic powder is not as good as fresh garlic.

Garlic powder has some chemical inside to prevent the powder to spoilt, children eat too much of these chemical preventive is not very good.

You can try to add other ingredient such as sweet soya sauce, prawn sauce, etc. to make your garlic fried rice more nicer, your 10 yrs old son will like it. Make a try....

  7. have you tried the minced garlic, usually sold in shaker. I usually don't eat them fresh or powder.

  8. Is it white rice?  White rice has no supplemental benefits.  I don't think garlic is an issue.

  9. I have been eating garlic powder for the better part of 1/2 a century! I am fine. Go for it. At least he is eating breakfast.

  10. Fresh garlic is the more advised for nutritious reason but in cooking powder is best for flavoring., but It does to clump up and stay in one location making it horrible when you bit of food that has it. But on the other hand power is more easy to spread around giving the food a all round garlic flavor, subtle but best.

  11. There really isn't any effects on health or growth, but in my opinion fresh is the best, especially as far as taste and quality.
