Garnet Exelby, Lane MacDermid sign on to one-year, two-way deals with Boston Bruins –NHL Free Agency
Boston Bruins announced the signing of defenseman, Garnet Exelby, and forward Lane MacDermid, as the National Hockey League (NHL) franchise agreed to a one-year, two-way contract for both on Wednesday, July 11, 2012.
Exelby, drafted as the 217th overall player back in round-eight of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft by the Atlanta Thrasher. Up until now, the 30-year-old has not played with Boston Bruins and saw his last major league season with Toronto Maple Leafs back in 2009-2010.
The native of Craik, Saskatoon, Canada, is looking to make a comeback in the NHL and showing off his performance in the American Hockey League (AHL), just might be his ticket back to the major league.
In 408 games played, the defender has 50 points (7 goals, 43 assists).
“He is still young enough to become a regular in the rotation,” Neil Abbott, Exelby’s agent, wrote in an email talking about his client. “He is very pleased to be joining the organization and the fans will really enjoy his hitting ability.”
Exelby’s contract in worth $600,000 if he plays in the NHL while $130,000 for participating in Boston Bruins’ minor league affiliate in Providence.
He was picked up by the Maple Leafs on July 1, 2009, from Atlanta in trade for Pavel Kubina and Tim Stapleton, but was not able to impress the Toronto club after playing 51 games registering just four points (1 goal, 3 assists).
Lane MacDermid on the other hand, was drafted as the 112th overall player during round-four of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft by Boston Bruins. He has played in just five games this past season with no points to his name.
MacDermid’s contract is nearly identical to his previous one-year deal as it has a salary cap hit of $600,000 for performing in the NHL and $70,000 in the minor league.
At the age of 22, the left winger still has enough time to prove himself in the minor leagues and eventually move up to a position with Boston Bruins.
In 78 games with Providence Bruins during the 2010-2011 season, Lane MacDermid had 19 points (7 goals, 12 assists).
