Garret Jones shines as Pittsburgh Pirates defeat St. Louis Cardinals 5-4 – MLB Update
Garrett Jones had a homer in the 11th inning on Tuesday, August 16 to help the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-4 at PNC Park.
The victory brought the Pirates fifth win in the 21 games they have played.
St. Louis Cardinals who were tipped to be toughest contenders in the ballpark had every aspect of a winning team. But their efficacy seemed to be going down a little as Chris Carpenter could not initially contain the resurgent Pittsburgh Pirates’ offence.
Despite that, the team manager still repose his confidence in Carpenter. "Those are just numbers. They just reflect how great he is," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said. "But he is great. He's a real weapon. I can guarantee you, though, he's not happy
right now because we lost."
The Cardinals are way past the Pirates as the former have 64 wins to their credit while the latter reel behind with 58 wins. But Tuesday’s game can help the team look for a better time in the days ahead as the season progresses.
Jeff Karstens started the game on Tuesday with a shut-out inning followed by Chris Carpenter of the St. Louis Cardinals who did not allow any run either. The second inning, however, saw Cardinals have their first run of the game.
Skip Schumaker had a single to right to give an early lead to the Cardinals. The lead was sufficient enough for the Cardinals, so it seemed. But it was then turned for good by the Andrew McCutchen with his three-run homer.
"It didn't sound like it was hit that well off the bat and it wound up going 15 feet over my head," McCutchen said. "It was pretty embarrassing running after that ball." Pittsburgh’s hitter homered to left to bring the Pirates back in the game with that
massive hit, giving the team a 3-1 lead.
That was a lead that Karstens could maintain well till the sixth. However, Albert Pujols homered to right to bring the lead down to 3-2 while David Freese doubled to deep right to level the score for the St. Louis Cardinals.
Chris Carpenter remained unchanged while Karsents was relieved by Jose Veras. The starter and the reliever of their respective teams pitched strong enough inning up until the eighth that kept the score level.
Matt Holliday had a hit in ninth to make it 4-3 for the Cardinals while Neil Walker was quick to have a single to level the score once again. As the game proceeded and entered into the 11th inning, Garrett Jones hit the game-winning homer against
Arthur Rhodes to give the Pittsburgh Pirates a wonderful 5-4 win in the game.
