Garrett Reynolds remains undefeated at BMX Street – X Games 17 Update
Garrett Reynolds continued his domination of BMX Street at X Games, collecting his fourth consecutive gold medal in the discipline by winning the finals that went down at Event Deck at L.A Live in Los Angeles, California, on Sunday, July 31.
San Diego-native Dennis Enarson finished as runner-up to secure his second consecutive silver medal. Huntington Beach’s Dakota Roche rounded out the podium to take home the bronze.
Ever since the inauguration of BMX Street at X Games in 2008, the 21-year-old Reynolds had never let the gold escape him. His success at the latest edition of X Games simply asserted his domination in the discipline.
During his post-final interview, Reynolds said, “I didn’t really stress on it much; I just did what I do every day. I went out and had fun on my bike and it worked out and I am really happy that it did. This was probably one of my favourite courses that
X Games has had, so good job to them.”
Pitted against Enarson, Roche, Ty Morrow and Jeremiah Smith in the final battle for gold, Reynolds completely stole the show with his sensational combos. His runs featured a grind up the short rail, bar-spin out to manual around the deck, bar-spin 180 to
fakie into the bank, double bar-spin 180, a bar-spin to bar-spin gap over the wheelchair ramp rail and a 180 to reverse crooked grind to 180 down the short rail.
Earning 46 out of possible 50 in each of his two best runs, Reynolds finished with a combined-total of 92 points, triumphing over his competition with a convincing margin.
The 20-year-old Enarson came up with impressive runs as well, which featured down tail-whips and opposite 360s over the rail hop, 360 gaps over the big rail to flat and long nose wheelie line. Earning 44 and 41 in his two best runs, he finished one place
behind Reynolds for the second year in a row.
The 24-year-old Roche finished in third place after earning 44 and 40 in his two best runs to collect his first ever X Games medal. He was delighted with his podium-finish.
Talking to a reporter after the final he said, “I never would have thought this would happen. It is cool that I am so close home, so this has a good hometown feeling. I am pretty hyped.”
Morrow finished in fourth place after earning a combined-total of 77 points, while Smith rounded out the fifth position with a combined-total of 71 points.
After four-peat in BMX Street, Reynolds would be hoping to make his streak even more extensive next year. After watching the young rider command the course with his unbeatable runs on Sunday, one cannot help but feel that his domination of the discipline
will continue for a while.
