Garrigues/Shvedova crushes Grandin/Uhlirova to enter the title-round – Family Circle Cup 2012
Spanish-Kazakh duo, Anabel Medina Garrigues and Yaroslava Shvedova, devastated the South African-Czech pair, Natalie Grandin and Vladimira Uhlirova, with a breadstick at the Family Circle Cup 2012 on Saturday. They joggled up a 6-1, 6-3 score line against
their opponents to cruise into the final showdown at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier event held in Charleston, United States.
The unseeded Spanish-Kazakh collaboration got the better of Grandin and Uhlirova in straight sets at the Family Circle Tennis Center. After overpowering their opponents in almost an hour-long venture, Garrigues and Shvedova confidently advanced into the
final round.
Garrigues and Shvedova flashed into this green clay court event and jumped to a 3-0 lead with two breaks of serve. In spite of losing their serve in the proceeding game, they maintained their intensity and stroke out the last three games. The Spanish-Kazakh
junction failed to block the lone breakpoint they came across but capitalised on four out of six break opportunities to pull out the opener with a breadstick.
The booming Spanish-Kazakh tandem kept momentum rolling into the follow-up set and after getting the critical break in the second game, they leaped to a 2-0 lead. Apart from losing their serve twice and trailing at 2-3, they capitalised on another break
chance in the sixth game and levelled the scores. Garrigues and Shvedova then held their composure and after cashing in another break opportunity in the last game, they clinched the set with a 6-3 score line.
All in all, the winning team jolted down exceptional stats. They formulated a better first serve share of 73 per cent in contrast with their rivals’ 60 per cent and acceptably clicked 18 out of 29 points on it. The Spanish-Kazakh tandem failed to defend
all three breakpoints they encountered but converted seven out of 10 break opportunities to their advantage, ultimately stealing the limelight.
Next up for Garrigues and Shvedova are the wild card enterers, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Lucie Safarova. The Russian-Czech junction stunned the top seeded Americans, Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond, in straight sets to secure this final spot. They lost
their serve three times but cashed in four out of five break chances to seal the deal with a 6-4, 7-6(9) success.
