Garswood lands Lennox Stakes after thrilling encounter – Horseracing news
Garswood kept his cool to claim the bet365 Lennox Stakes (Group 2) at Goodwood in England on Tuesday, July 30, 2013.
He was rated as the favourite to succeed and managed to live up to the expectations of the bookies and the punters. Although things were not easy for him and his camp would have been extremely nervous towards the ending moments of the race, he managed to
stay calm and collected to stay ahead of his rivals.
Since the overall distance to cover was seven furlongs, it was extremely important for all of the runners to start well. However, Garswood was not lucky enough to get a clean start and was help up by some of the slower stallions. He did not have any room
to gain advantage over his rivals and came under immense pressure.
At one stage, it appeared that the race would end up as an upset, but the favourite stallion made a fantastic recovery towards the final couple of furlongs. When he saw some space in front of him, he simply gave everything to come close to the leader and
eventually overtook him towards the finish line. The margin of his victory was just a neck, which proved how close things were out there.
After the end of the race, Emma Armstrong, who owns Garswood in partnership with her husband David and Cheveley Park Stud, said: “I can't believe it, it's absolutely super. We knew when he got the ground that this was to be his day.”
On the other hand, the winning trainer Richard Fahey was also pleased with the outcome of the race and said that things will definitely get better for his challenger with the passage of time.
The seasoned trainer added, “He is still not the finished article yet and we are hoping he can be a Group 1 horse in the future. We don't normally get the rub of the green at Goodwood so we will go home smiling tonight.”
Overall, this was the third victory for Garswood in the sport and second in the ongoing season. He has been doing a good job and will definitely be looking to end the year on a high.
