  1. Garter snakes eat fish and frogs. They don't eat insects. They rarely eat rodents in the wild. Often they will eat worms, but they prefer fish and frogs. Go to the pet store and buy some rosey red minnows or catch some minnows with a dip net. Do not give it goldfish. They are not good for reptiles. When it gets big enough to eat mice (if it isn't already), you can rub fish slime on a pinky mouse and it should take it that way and eventually learn to accept mice without scenting. Here's a website with a good caresheet:

  2. Garter snakes eat fish. Get some feeder goldfish from your local pet store and put them in its water bowl. Small ones will sometimes eat crickets but I imagine only if they have no other choice

  3. Garter snakes will not eat insects and an all fish diet, as has been suggested by many posters, will cause a severe vitamin deficiency that will harm and can kill your snake. Earthworms are their preferred food as newborns and juveniles. They will also eat salamanders, small frogs, tadpoles, snails, slugs, small fish/minnows in moderation. Feeder goldfish offer almost no nutritional value to the snake.

I've been raising Eastern garters for over 40 yrs and all of mine are wild captures or born of wild captured snakes and all of them eat mice of the proper size with no coaxing whatsoever once they reach sexual maturity, around 18 mo. -2 yrs. of age.

You know that you can find fishing worms at any fish bait shop if you can't find any in your yard or the park.

  4. Mice.  Don't feed him human food.

  5. garter snake are the only snake that wont eat a mouse unless it HAS to. Try fish...then later try rubbing the fish on the mouse, keep doing this less and less until your snake will eat the mouse without you rubbing fish all over it. They eat frogs too, but it is NOT recommended because the make the snake sick, also do not feed your snake worms found after rain or storms or red Wrigglers because they prove toxic to the snake

  6. mice....just go to the pet store tommorow or thursday he will be fine

  7. You are in a bit of a predicament.  Because you do not have anything in your kitchen he'll eat.   But there is a ray of hope.  He will be able to go with out food till you can get to a store.   They do not eat that often anyways.  And when you feed them I recommend you feed them the same thing I feed mine and they love it. and it is super cheap.  Once a week I go to the pet shop and buy 1-2 dozen feeder fish and put them in his water bowl.  It is also very fun to watch him go after them.  When I say feeder fish I mean one inch or less.   Good Luck  The garter is a very harty snake.

  8. I bought a cheap fish tank and a bunch of guppies.  They will multiply if you give them time and keep a fresh supply of food going.
