Garth Mulroy Conquered the Alfred Dunhill Championship to grab his first European Tour Win
Garth Mulroy, a South African golfer, won the Alfred Dunhill Championship on his home soil for the first time in his career. It was his first European Tour Title too, finishing 4 under, 68 to take the lead over Briton George Murray and winning the event
with overall 19 under.
"I just tried to play smart golf and hit it in the right spots," said Mulroy. "I don't think I've ever raised my hand before a putt went in, but I did it there".
"I had allowed my thoughts to get a little ahead of themselves earlier on, but I managed to concentrate on the job at hand."
His previous best European Tour performance was in the 2011 Joburg Open where he finished 2nd and he had earlier also tied for 2nd, in the 2008 Joburg Open.
Mulroy managed 6 birdies on the final day to secure the victory. He almost lost the game when he bogeyed the 14th hole but soon after that, Murray eagled the 15th, leveling the scores. Mulroy then birdied his 15th and 16th holes
to take the lead again and pared the last two holes to seal his victory.
South African George Coetzee finished 3 under par 69 to finish for a 3rd place tie in the event. He was tied with compatriot, Jaco van Zyl, Chile's Felipe Aguilar and England’s Peter Whiteford.
James Kamte shot 6 under, 66 to mark his name among the top 10 in the event and it was also the best final round score in the Alfred Dunhill Championship.
Mulroy earned his PGA Tour card recently but he hasn’t confirmed his participation in the PGA tour as yet. Accoring to Mulroy, he has yet to decide which tournament to play next year.
"I haven't even thought about it. It's nice to have options though. It's just a pity the tours are at the same time," he quipped.
Currently, he is playing in the European Tour with a total of 7 professional career wins, including 3 wins in the Sunshine Tour, 2 wins in the Nationwide Tour and single wins in the Big Stakes Match Play Championship and Gary Player Invitational.
