Garth Mulroy shows improvement after unimpressive first round in Alfred Dunhill Championship
Garth Mulroy made his own personal history last year, when he won the Alfred Dunhill Championship on the Leopard Creek Golf Club course.
This year, the South African professional golfer gave an unimpressive performance in the first round when the tournament kicked off on the 13th of December.
It seems unlikely for Mulroy to defend his title, however, some exceptional results in the coming rounds will definitely change the course of his tournament.
The second round was slightly better for the South African as he carded a score of four-under 68.
Mulroy recorded four birdies in the second round on the 2nd, 13th, 15th and the 16th hole.
Although the top players on the leaderboard have extended their leads, Mulroy is in such a position that if he comes up with the goods, he can definitely spoil the tournament for the top contenders.
The South African has the potential to cause an upset and defend his title but for that, he will have to show better results.
The second day on the Leopard Creek Golf Club course saw many players raising the level of their game to surge atop the leaderboard.
Louis Oosthuizen, who is also a South African, played a decent second round and came out of the mess he put himself in after the first-round results came.
Mulroy came into the tournament as a confident man. For a player, defending his title gives him confidence but at the same time it is demanding as well.
With so many expectations from the fans, the pressure can get into the head of a player and can be the cause of a poor performance.
For the defending champion, to beat all odds and come out on top again will be something to look forward to. However, it seems unlikely as the top field is crowded with the top golfers on the tour.
Charl Schwartzel is considered to be the top contender for the title this time around, but his party is being spoiled by a Frenchman, Gregory Bourdy.
Bourdy demonstrated his golfing exploits to perfection during the first round and carried the same momentum in the second round to share the lead with Schwartzel.
