Garth Mulroy surges to the top in the European Tour sanctioned Alfred Dunhill Championship
South African Garth Mulroy is probably on his way to post his maiden victory on the European Tour after a sizzling eight-under, 64 to grab the lead in the Alfred Dunhill Championship in his home turf. Mulroy, who has opened up with rounds of 69 and 68 in
the opening two rounds of the event, pulled in eight stunning birdies without dropping a single shot throughout the day, carding five consecutive birdies on the back nine.
“I didn’t make a lot of putts until that back nine. It was nice to see them start rolling in,” he said. “I would’ve liked six in a row, but I had to lay it up after my drive. It’s a dangerous pin so you just back off that pin a bit,” he said, after missing
the 541-yards par-five, 18th.
Mulroy, a 33-year-old Nationwide Tour graduate, has come close several times to lift his maiden trophy but was overpowered and had to settle for runners up.
“It’s been an inconsistent year,” he added. “I had the win in the first half then nothing in the middle, so it would be nice to finish it off with something special here at the end of the year.” A win here at Alfred Dunhill Championship will catapult Mulroy
to the top of the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit. Charl Schwartzel is currently leading the coveted list.
Chilean Felipe Aguilar has now surged into contention after his stealthy blast on the third day, carding a round of four-under, 68. Being overnight leader, Aguilar owes his current position to his stunning round of 64 on the second day, where he took over
the first round leader to soar to the top. He carded seven birdies but lost three of them to bogeys in the 18-hole stretch at the scenic Leopard Creek Country Club in Malelane.
Four players are now tied for the third spot including Scott George Murray and Peter Whiteford, South Africans Jbe Kruger and Hennie Otto.
South African George Coetzee, the only player in the field to feature in top-100 in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), is now tied for eighth along with two other players. Coetzee is also looking for his maiden victory on the European Tour.
