Gary Anderson believes Mercedes’ super DRS is not providing expected benefit – Formula 1 news
Former technical director of Jaguar, Gary Anderson has said that the super DRS of Mercedes is not providing them the expected advantage over other contenders in the 2012 Formula 1 season.
Anderson said that the innovative DRS design of the Brackley based team which has been very much criticised during the start of the season, is taking more from the team instead of delivering what was intended.
It will be important to mention that the new DRS design of W03 provides the driver slightly more increase in the pace as compared to the other rivals on the straight line of the track. However, Anderson said that Mercedes must make sure that they are using
their DRS on the track on which it can maximise their outcome rather than affecting their scores negatively.
“Mercedes have a very conventional rear-end aerodynamic treatment and are not trying to exploit the exhaust gases for aerodynamic effect in the way McLaren, Ferrari and Red Bull are,” he said. “There are 0.2-0.3 seconds a lap in trying to do that - all produced
from greater rear-end grip. If Mercedes want to improve, they would be better advised to build that kind of exhaust system.”
Nevertheless, the F1 pundit said that the circuit of the Belgian Grand Prix will hopefully provide a suitable platform for W03 to make the most out of its novel DRS activated F-duct device.
“The next race is at Spa, where the Double DRS will provide some benefits because there are long straights and some kinks where it will be beneficial to run with the DRS open,” he added.
Besides, it will be important to mention that the team principal of Mercedes, Ross Brawn has recently said that they are trying their best to make the required improvements so as to come up stronger in each and every kind of track to make their mark prominent
in this year’s championship battle.
At present, they are standing at 5th position in the constructors’ championship with 106 points ahead of Sauber and behind Ferrari.
Let’s see how their drivers, Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg perform in the season ahead.
