Gary Boyd creates symmetry of birdies at the BMW Italian Open
Gary Boyd recorded 12 birdies in the first three rounds of the BMW Italian Open presented by CartaSi and three of them came on the par-five eighth hole.
During the final round on Sunday, the Englishman’s six-iron second shot on the eighth hole went directly in the hole for an albatross.
He recorded another six birdies in the final round, to record the best score of the day – a nine-under par 63.
It was a great display of consistency by the 25-year-old, as his scorecard showed some kind of symmetry, in regards to scoring birdies on specific holes.
In each of the four rounds, he recorded birdies on the 18th hole and signed red dots on the 14th hole in the last three rounds at the Royal Park I Roveri.
At the end of the tournament, he found himself in a share of the fifth place, which allowed him to take a place among the top-115 players in The Race to Dubai.
It was a huge achievement for the one-time European Tour winner, who was struggling to create his chances of retaining the European Tour card for the 2013 golf season.
According to him, it was the best performance of his career on the European Tour. He stated that at one point, when he recorded a double-eagle, he thought of getting to the top of the leaderboard.
Even though, he did not succeed in his mission, he made his fans cheerful by a beautiful display of the game in the tournament.
He now plans to remain consistent during the rest of the season, in order to retain his position in the top-115 players in the money list, who will be allowed to play the full European Tour in 2013.
"That's probably the best I've ever played in my career,” he said. “It was a nice start and then I really got the round going with an albatross at the eighth. At that point I was thinking that maybe I was back in the tournament with a chance to win”.
"There's a lot of pressure at this time of year and to have practically got over the line this week, with still a few tournaments to go, is a good feeling,” he added.
