Gary Boyd one stroke behind Henrik Stenson after Round 1 of BMW International Open
Gary Boyd smashed a score of 7-under-par, 65 in the first round of BMW International Open to take the second spot, one stroke behind leader, Henrik Stenson. The Englishman led the field until the last hole, where he dropped a shot
to surrender the lead to Stenson. The €2,000,000 European Tour event is taking place at the par-72 Golf club München Eichenried in Munich, Germany.
Boyd teed-off from the back and reeled five birdies to set the course on fire. His powerful start became a source of threat for the entire field, which included top guns like Martin Kaymer, Bernhard Langer, Dustin Johnson and Matteo
Manassero. Undaunted by the star-studded field, Boyd wrapped-up the front with a score of five-under-par, 31.
On his way to the back nine, the Englishman birdied three more holes to summit the leaderboard, but not for long. The player failed to save par at the closing hole and hence, had to see Stenson pass him and take the T1 spot of the
day.
Pleased with his start, the 24-year-old marched towards the clubhouse and promised the fans of a similar performance in the upcoming rounds.
“I holed some great putts when I needed to and that's been the difference the last couple of weeks. I have been working a lot on pace - the hole never comes to the ball, does it? Obviously, the last hole was disappointing to finish
with a six on a par five when I was in good position after my second shot. But I felt good on the golf course today and I'm looking forward to the next three rounds,” said Boyd, while talking to the press.
Boyd will be hoping to start the next day on a high and achieve the lowest score possible. The one-stroke deficit wouldn't worry him much considering his flawless short game that he displayed today. The player also demonstrated his
prowess over the driver in the opening round, something he would be backing on in the following rounds.
