Gary Carter to be honoured at Honda Classic
Organisers of Honda Classic have decided to honour long-time Palm Beach County local Gary Carter.
The committee announced that it will pay tribute to the baseball catcher by dedicating an entire day to his name.
For this purpose, Thursday has been declared as Gary Carter Day for the opening round of competition at PGA National event.
The Hall of Fame catcher played in over 19 major leagues and during his career invested tremendously to help New York Mets win the title in the year 1986.
He was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour in May and then breathed his last on the 16th of this month.
During his lifetime, Carter founded the Gary Carter Foundation. The institute has been making groundbreaking efforts to initiate programs related to raising awareness regarding diagnosis of diabetes in juveniles.
In addition to this, it has also been making efforts to launch reading programs for children.
So far, it has been estimated that the foundation has successfully raised $620,000 for the fulfilment of these objectives.
According to Honda Classic Executive Director Ken Kennerly, "Gary was a great friend to the tournament".
He added, "He was a frequent participant in the Wednesday pro-am and made himself available as a celebrity for us whenever possible. Gary's charitable work over the years for children in need was similar to the Honda Classic's efforts in the same regard".
In order to make the initiative a success, the committee announced that the first 1,000 fans entering the gate of the event will be provided special T-shirts written Team Carter on it.
The shirts have been designed especially in memory of the reputed player with the nickname he was commonly referred to with.
It is important to mention here that Carter was a resident of Palm Beach County for nearly three decades.
In order to honour him in the most proper way, all collections and revenue generated from the event will be provided to The Gary Carter Foundation.
In his 18-year career, Carter was able to establish his reputation as one of the most prominent baseball players of all time.
With a batting average of .262 and 324 home runs, he still remains an everlasting inspiration for many looking to pursue their career in baseball.
