Gary Christian surprises everybody with his first round 66 at The Barclays
With the likes of Tiger Woods, Rory Mcllroy and Padraig Harrington on the field, who would have thought that Gary Christian of England will be making headlines after the first round?
Gary Christian shot a magnificent first round of 66 to finish two strokes ahead of Tiger Woods and two strokes behind the leader, Padraig Harrington.
The moment when Gary stepped up on the green at the 18th, there were hardly any people around. One of the guys was sleeping right at his face but it did not bother him, as it was the first time this year that he was playing in such an atmosphere.
Christian only suffered from a bogey on the final hole but he was extremely happy with his overall performance. He is not thinking about the larger things, at the moment. He is just enjoying probably the best round of his life.
“I almost kept a 5 off my card and that’s about as good as you can play out here,” Christian said after.
“To me, this is the first major I have ever played in — between the quality of the course and the quality of the field. And I was interested to see how my game measured up. I am pleased to play the way I know I am capable of and see that it stacks up pretty
good”.
Christian has dealt with his share of problems throughout his career but he has always had support from his family, sponsors and coaching staff. He had been playing well and lately, he said that such a round was on the cards.
Christian’s caddie also said that his performance was no surprise to him, as Gary has been playing extremely well for the last couple of months. He also praised that Gary is a very solid player from tee to green and he expected him to do well here.
Gary, however, knows the enormous task ahead of him, as top-30 players on the FedEx standings are currently under 25 at the Bethpage. He would be on his toes right from the start if he expects himself to do well in the coming rounds.
“It was not a surprise to me,” he said. “It’s just that it took a little bit longer than maybe a lot of other people”.
