Gary Christian’s journey to the US Tour
Gary Christian, the Nationwide Tour golf player, has been successfully playing his debut season at Professional Golf Association (PGA), since the January’s Sony Open in Hawaii.
The 40-year-old English professional golfer has played many events in the past, but none on the PGA Tour.
He qualified for the 2012 season by finishing last year on the ninth position of the Nationwide Tour money list.
The former London pension administrator turned professional in 1997. He had secured two victories at the Nationwide Tour staged events, the Northeast Pennsylvania Classic in 2009 and 2011’s Mylan Classic successfully.
He is famous for winning 30+ mini tournaments throughout his career. In total, he has won 32+ professional events in the past.
Now, at the age of 40, he has luckily gained a chance to perform at the mega tournaments, staged by the PGA. He said that being selected by the leading organiser is very impressive.
"English people tend to be more realistic," Christian said. "I would have never kept playing the game if I knew I couldn't progress beyond a certain level".
He commented, "If my goal was to make the Nationwide Tour and make the cut a few times, I would have quit 10 years ago. My goal was specific -- to get to the Nationwide Tour, play well, win, develop tools necessary to get on the PGA Tour, and stay on the
tour".
According to the Englishman, Nationwide Tour was the ladder to reach the PGA Tour successfully.
He played well last year and was honoured to be among the 11 golfers, who played their debut tournament of PGA at Sony Open in Hawaii.
Since January, he has appeared in four tournaments and successfully made the cut in three. His best performance of the current year was at the Humana Challenge, which was in partnership with the Clinton Foundation.
Christian tremendously scored a 17-under 271 and secured the 14th position among hundreds. He competed well against others field players.
His first career at PGA is going well. However, if wants his name to be written in golden letters, he has to win a tournament this year.
