Gary Hallberg records second place finish at The Senior Open Championship
Gary Hallberg recorded a blistering four-under par 66 on Sunday to claim the second position at The Senior Open Championship presented by Rolex.
Hallberg’s performance throughout the tournament went through different phases. At times, he stunned his opponents through impressive stroke-play in windy conditions and sometimes he faltered in favourable circumstances.
He started off his campaign at Turnberry with a one-over par 71 in the opening round. The very next round witnessed him level the course record, as he recorded eight birdies against a lone bogey for a seven-under par 63.
He once again faltered on Saturday and suffered seven bogeys against four birdies. It seemed as if he was playing a see-saw game of bad-round and good-round.
At the end of the tournament, he was pleased with his overall performance in the tournament. According to him, it was a great achievement for him to record such good scores in difficult conditions when everyone else failed to post good scores on the leaderboard.
“I played my two best rounds in the worst of the conditions,” said Hallberg. “I was very pleased with the way I played and congratulations to Freddie on a great performance”.
“I didn’t think about setting a target. I tried to stay in the present moment. I think I did a nice job of that. I wanted to get ahead of myself. But I stayed in the present moment”.
He finished just two strokes behind the winner Fred Couples. It was Couples’ first ever Senior Open Championship victory.
In the meantime, Carl Mason also recorded the best round of the day, four-under par 66, and shared the third spot on the leaderboard. His overall score at the end of the event was four-under par, five behind Couples.
d**k Mast (67) and Barry Lane (69) were the other two players who joined Mason with the same tournament score.
Mason played alongside Tom Watson in the same group and enjoyed playing golf against one of the best players the game of golf has ever produced.
“I was chuffed with the way I played,” he said. “It was tricky again but I was right into it. I kept drawing myself back to how well I played with Tom.... But he's a pleasure to play with, and it was great”.
