Gary Kirsten gears up for his new role as the South Africa coach – Cricket News Update
Gary Kirsten, the former India coach, who led Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his men to their first World Cup title in 28-years, is gearing up to kick start his new role as the Proteas coach.
The 43-year-old former South Africa batsman has said that he has a lot of planning to do as he is getting ready to mentor his compatriots after a successful stint with the Indian cricket team, which saw them touching the pinnacle of the game.
"There has been a fair amount of planning going on, and I've had a few one-on-ones with the players," said Kirsten while talking to the media reporters.
While giving the details of his plans as the new Proteas coach, Kirsten said that he had met with his predecessor Corrie van Zyl to discuss the team affairs.
"I've also met with Corrie van Zyl in his role (as head of) the High Performance Centre in Pretoria,” Kirsten told the media. “A special camp has been scheduled at the end this month ahead of the Proteas' first International match of the season against Australia
in Cape Town on October 13," he added further.
The former Proteas top order batsman was appointed as the new South Africa coach on June 6 but he officially took over the new role on 1st of this month.
The special camp Kirsten talked about, is most probably organized to help players participating in the 2011 Champions League Twenty20 tournament scheduled to be held in India in September-October this year.
Two Provincial teams from South Africia, Cobras and Warriors have qualified for the 2011 CLT20, while the wicketkeeper batsman, AB de Villiers and right-arm medium pacer Albie Morkel, will represent Royal Challengers and Chennai Super Kings in the tournament.
South Africa is scheduled to play Sri Lanka and Australia in their upcoming series and Kirsten said that he is keepinh a close eye on the two outfits facing off each other in former’s backyard.
Sri Lanka last toured the rainbow nation in 2002 and both the sides have not played a Test series since 2006, but Kirsten is not bothered by the fact as he is coming into the Proteas camps with a lot of knowledge of the Lankan players which he gained during
his stint with India.
