Gary Kirsten left the coaching job at the right time: Sunil Gavaskar
Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has said that the outgoing Indian coach http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gary-Kirsten-c58527 has left the job at the right time.
Kirsten helped India to win the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 and played a crucial role in developing a balanced team that had been shattered after a disastrous World Cup 2007 campaign in the Caribbean.
Gavaskar believes that it is always good to leave a job when the people want you to stay rather than leaving the job when no one wants you anymore.
The former Indian skipper added, “Yes, he got it right. Better to leave when people are asking you to stay than when people are looking to kick you out.”
Apart from the World Cup triumph, India became the number one ranked Test team in the world for the first time ever under Kirsten's watchful guidance. He was also instrumental in the development of some of the younger players like Suresh Raina and Virat
Kohli.
Gavaskar had put up Kirsten’s name as the coach of the Indian team. He revealed that while he was unaware of former South African opener’s skills as a coach, he was rather impressed with his approach towards the sport. Kirsten and Gavaskar were on the panel
for ICC awards.
“I had no idea about his coaching skills but was impressed with his work ethic as a player and the thoughtful manner in which he assessed players when he was part of the International Cricket Council selection committee that picks the annual Test and one-day
teams for the ICC awards,” Gavaskar, himself a legendary opening batsman, added.
Former South African opener announced last year that the World Cup would be his last assignment as the coach of the Indian team because he wanted to spend time with his family. Kirsten has turned out to be the most successful coach for India ever.
Kirsten has been contacted by Cricket http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 for the coaching role there but he has not finalised anything yet.
Gavaskar also said that http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 should appoint a local coach temporarily as a stop gap solution.
