Gary Lockett reckons Gavin Rees can outclass the unbeaten Andy Murray – Boxing news
Gavin Rees’ trainer Gary Lockett reckons his fighter can outclass the unbeaten Irishman Andy Murray in the European lightweight title clash on Saturday at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff.
Both boxers weighed in at Cardiff City Hall on Friday ahead of their bout and Rees came off the scale half pound heavier than his opponent, as he weighed 134.5lbs whereas Murray weighed 134lbs.
The 31-year-old Welshman Rees, who is aiming to become a two-weight world champion, told the media that he believes his journey starts off with Murray, who on the other side is bidding for his vacant European lightweight title.
Lockett meanwhile commented on his fighter and remarked he is fully prepared to dominate the Irish. Though he admitted he has a lot of respect for Murray, he said only a few would think Murray can beat Gavin.
“He's good, he's well-schooled, and his upright stance which might be a factor in how the fight goes,” said Lockett. “But we've got a lot of respect for Andy Murray – Gavin was an unbeaten prospect when he beat Souleymane M'baye for the WBA title when nobody
expected anything of Gavin.”
Lockett admitted the fact that Murray is a dangerous fighter and has the capabilities of turning the tables but on the same note he stated they have made the necessary arrangements.
While speaking on his inclusion, he said, “The majority of people don't expect Andy to beat Gavin but an unbeaten prospect like Andy is a dangerous proposition and we've prepared for him with that in mind. He's a good puncher and he's not just a reckless
bull of a fighter who just charges in, he's got good skills and good boxing ability and I've just had to fine tune things with Gavin, that's all.”
Meanwhile, the other interesting fight which will take place on Saturday sees the Celtic Super-Bantamweight belt holder, Carl Frampton taking on Robbie Turley.
