Gary Neal cuts finger while zipping up his luggage, returns on Monday night for San Antonio Spurs – NBA News
Gary Neal may be one of the most promising talents currently in the league, and might have earned a place for himself in the starting line-up of Gregg Popovich with the San Antonio Spurs, but there are some things that even the
best of us can get wrong. And among those things is pulling up the zipper of your luggage.
Neal suffered a cut on his finger while packing his luggage for a game against the Los Angeles Lakers at Staples Center last week. Ironically, Neal was coming off the best game of his career, scoring 27 points in a win for the
Spurs over the Portland Trail Blazers, but the cut had him missing two games, although he was back for the game against the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday night. And even though Neal is a respected figure in the Spurs locker room for his reliability and basketball
skill, the Spurs roster is sure to take a dig at him for the way he injured himself.
“It’s bad luck, right? I was zipping up my bag, and I ripped it across the zipper and it just pulled the skin off. It was bad luck. Sometimes things happen,” said Neal about the injury.
The San Antonio Express – News Spurs blog was the first one to write about Neal’s injury, and they said that his cut did in fact come from the zipper of his luggage.
“Neal had just enjoyed the best game of his NBA career, pouring in 27 points to spark a comeback victory over Portland, when fate intervened with a place in the annals of bizarre sports injuries — a gashed finger incurred while
zipping up a piece of luggage prior to last week’s Lakers game at Staples Center,” read the story.
Neal has, over the course of the last season, become a regular started in a Spurs team that is as deep as any other in the NBA, and has amazed the Spurs fans with his skills and scoring abilities. His value to the team is immense
at this moment, as he carves out a career for himself, and any serious injury at his point would be catastrophic not only for the team, but also for his own career.
