Gary Neville believes time will heal Rooney rift
Manchester United defender Gary Neville believes the Old Trafford fans will forgive Wayne Rooney after he had declared that he wanted to leave the club.
The Rooney saga came to an end when the striker signed a new contract on Friday 22 October and committed his long-term future to the club.
Fans had staged a protest outside the player’s home in Cheshire, but Neville believes the hype surrounding the Manchester United striker will die down over time.
Neville said, “It will take time to settle down but once it settles down he will go on to have a great career and win trophies here."
Neville played his 600th game for Manchester United in their 2-1 win against Stoke and he believes that Rooney has made the right choice in staying at Old Trafford.
The striker changed his decision to leave after his agent Paul Stretford met with Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson and chairman David Gill.
Stretford had earlier made contact with Gill to inform the club that Rooney wanted to leave, but the England international made a dramatic decision to stay at Manchester United.
However, Rooney’s earlier statements that he wanted a transfer have angered supporters and Alex Ferguson has tried to place the blame on Rooney’s agent and not the player.
Neville, who has spent his whole career at Manchester United, believes that it was in Manchester United’s and Wayne Rooney’s best interests that he remained at Old Trafford.
The right back said, "He has made the right decision. The club gets to keep a great player, someone who works hard for the team every week."
"The right thing has happened for Wayne, for his career and for his life," he added.
Rooney will hope that he can win back the supporters this Saturday against Tottenham by producing the kind of displays that had made him a hero at the club.
