Gary Penrose reckons revival of tournament at Barbican Centre can boost the game – Snooker news
Gary Penrose reckons that the revival of the tournament at the Barbican Centre can boost snooker in the Minster city.
Penrose is the owner of Cueball Snooker Club in Alexandra Court.
There is already a buzz going on for the UK Championship, as it will be held at the Barbican Centre. Penrose thinks the Cueball Snooker Club will be a gift for those who hardly like to buy any tickets.
He believes the new league, which will probably start in September and offers prize money of 6,000 pounds, can bring in many new players.
While speaking on his inclusion, he said, “It’s nice to have an open league again. I hope we can get the best players in this. There’s £6,000 in prize money over three years and that’s a lot of money. We’ve got darts, football, dominoes, pool – you name
it – and we’ve no snooker team. That’s bizarre because we are a snooker club. It’s another thing which is good for us. It’s about getting the younger ages in.”
Penrose also told the media they have always been helpful to the World Snooker. Moreover, he added this sort of an activity help them sell a lot of equipment like cues, tables and memberships.
He said, “We’ve always ended up helping World Snooker on a number of things as well. We have had coaching sessions down here with Ronnie O’Sullivan and they have sent previous champions to us for a day. We’ve usually ended up getting spin-offs from that
and it is always massive. People then think about buying cues and memberships. It is enormous for us.”
Penrose also revealed that this York league will work as a regular donor for the Paul Hunter Foundation, which helps people fighting against cancer.
Penrose is looking forward towards a huge response from the audience and the media as well, as he knows people despite having tables in their homes, like to come out to test their skills.
