Gonchar.........Agreed. I see his reasoning in leaving....He wants to free up cap room so we can sign other guys, but it's not like GR is a 5 mil dollar man, so I'm not understanding exactly his point.

  1. Roberts is a UFA...so he's free to go wherever they'll pay.  It's a business and that's his decision.

There's no way he'd get 2.5 mill from the Pens again.  That's more cash they can put towards locking up Fleury long-term.

So long Gary, thanks for the memories!

  2. If I may quote Rick Curran. Gary knows that the Penguins aren't going to be offering him a contract and he still wants to play two more years. So he's going to be looking come July 1st.

Gary has a cup and is driven to succeed. He can still be a top performer as a third line forward and a second power play player. His physical conditioning will enable him to give 12-15 minutes a game. Game in game out. Ottawa will give him two for two maybe even Montreal.

  3. I saw this on the news last night, but I didn't believe it until I read it in the paper this morning. Mr. Roberts will be missed as far as his cult hero status goes, and how... inspiring he is. (Beating people up at 42-years-old, lol.) But Roberts was a 3rd/4th liner who averaged about 13 minutes last season, and he just wasn't the same last season as he was in the 2006-07 season. Even when he came back from his injury in the playoffs, he just wasn't the same.

I think Max Talbot can take over for Roberts. He's chippy, he'll drop the gloves, and he's got decent hands. Hopefully he'll crash the net a bit more often. Ahhh, I love Max.

Anyway, as for players leaving... I think there are FOUR people left on the Tampa Bay Lightning's roster that played when they won their Cup. That goes to show how much lineups change. Especially these days with the cap. It's sad to see favorites go, but that's the nature of business.

Speaking of Max... he and Sykora's contracts are up next season. I can't imagine you then. LOL. I'll cry too though if/when Max leaves. He's awesome on and off the ice. Love your avatar, by the way. :D

  4. It appears this wasn't entirely Roberts' decision. Something tells me his paycheque is about to become a whole lot easier to cash.

  5. WHAT?! I wake up and come on here for hockey news. & I always open up your topics and they are never good. =(

He'll probably be with Recchi. I can see it...

  6. Eh, Not like Roberts was HUGE part of the Penguins. We can still possibly sign Hossa... no chance Malkin is going anywhere. No chance Fleury goes unsigned. So don't worry about it. We had a great draft. Things are still looking up for the Pens. Roberts leaving just opens up more cap space to offer Hossa.

I think it is a good thing, not bad.

I don't know where he ends up, I don't really care either.

  7. If he thinks he is going to make 2.5mil a year again... he better go to Russia. He wasnt worth that last yr, nor this year. He better be looking for 1mil oe less.....

He will go back to his home.... Calgary!

  8. First I've heard about this...link?

Just read that article. If anything, I think he'll re-sign with a team closer to Toronto. When he got dealt to Pittsburgh, I heard that one of his factors in deciding whether to lift his no-trade was to be closer to the gym that he owns.

  9. Yeah I heard about that this morning it sooooooo sad for the Pens. Hopefully he'll go to a good team.

  10. Russia on a line with Malkin and Simon.Maybe they can next get Conklin to play in the nets.Do you think Gary Roberts was the reason you went to the Cup Finals? No he can be replaced by another 40 yr old player.

Katie-Take a deep breath. All teams break up from time to time.I thought you were going to stay away from the computer?

  11. this is how i felt about gomez and rafalski and niedermeyer and arnot and mogilny and a LOT of etcs.

except even though we lost them all we still play well so i always have faith

  12. Kurfadle is right welcome to the NJ Devils world of the early millennium Niedermeyer, Gomez, Rafalski, Guerin, Holik, Rolston, Arnott, ect...ect...

Being a great team lasts a while. Creating a great team at the deadlines is normally temporary whether it's losing depth or gambling on rentals

  13. I'll definitely miss Roberts, but I'm ready to fall apart over Malkin. The Pens just wouldn't be the same without dear old Geno... D*mn those Russians! First they kick him out, and now they want him back? Losers.

  14. Im so disappointed. 42 and looking for other opportunities?

Unless they involve standing BEHIND the bench in a suit,

he's done. Stick a fork in him.

If they don't sign Ruutu there will be war. LOL

I think Roberts is gonna sign with the Leafs, and retire in Toronto.

  15. Kate I know how you feel.

First Malone, now maybe Hossa, Roberts is gone...AHHHHH!!!

Ruut's better sign on that dotted line for the Pen or I might have to be sedated!

Is it to early to start drinking!?!

  16. i hate when everyone leaves =(

    it will be ok tho

  17. http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/08176/892...

Personally, I dont feel this cult hero is worth 2.5 million/ yr.  We would be better off keeping Ruutu, same style of player just a lot younger...
