Gary Woodland withdraws from the Masters Tournament after injury
Gary Woodland withdrew from the Masters due to a wrist injuring, while playing the third round on Saturday, April 7, 2012.
The 27-year-old American professional golfer was playing his natural game at the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia.
He played two initial rounds averagely and faced physical health challenges in the third round. In the evening, he received medical attention, which kept him from moving further and he eventually withdrew from the event.
Woodland was playing on the 8th hole on Saturday, as he felt a sharp pain in his hand. He did not stop at that stage and planned to end the round. This was the worst decision taken by him, which eventually turned into a more serious injury by
the end of the day.
"I made a swing on eight and shot the pain up in the rest of the arm, all the way down the hand," Woodland said. "Should have stopped, trainers wanted me to stop, caddie was begging me to stop. I worked too hard to get here. I wanted to at least finish today
and we'll take it from there".
He added, “I should have stopped. My trainer wanted me to stop, my caddie was begging me to stop”.
Woodland scored a 1-over par in the first round on Thursday. He made four bogeys and three birdies and finished the round averagely.
His performance on Friday was better than the previous round. He scored five birdies and three bogeys, added -2 to the leaderboard scores.
He was playing normally during the first major tournament of the year. However, the eighth hole of Augusta, on Saturday, was the game changing hole.
He sustained an injury there and was unable to complete the round at or under par. He did not make any birdie and was in pain throughout the day.
Woodland carded five bogeys and four double bogeys, shot an 85 in the third round. Such disappointing scores were due to the wrist injury.
“I felt like I was right in the heart of the golf tournament,” Woodland said. “I thought I had a pretty good chance. And for this to happen, I'm pretty upset right now”.
Now, Woodland will be resting for a short time period. His medical team will decide when he can return to golf.
