Question:

Gas Gauge Issues?

I have an 86 procraft, with an Mercury 90 that is an 85. I bought it brand new in 86, and a couple mounths later, the gas gauge broke. I have checked everything, but nothing is wrong. The gas gauge wires are good. I have only used it 5 times in its life almost. Any advise?

  1. have a tech: Verify voltage at the tank sensor.  disconnect the wire to the tank. move away from the tank. connect a variable resistor wired as a variable resistor not a potentiometer about 2 megaohm to ground and the wire to the tank tweak the trimmer arm up and down the fuel gauge should move up and down. If it does the potentiometer inside the tank is defective.

Or put a voltmeter across the fuel gauge and add some gas in the tank the voltage should change. If it does and the gauge won't move then. it is the gauge.

  2. got 12v. at the gauge when the key is on?  continuity from sender to gauge on pink wire?  continuity from sender to negative battery post?  pull sender...any rust or stiffness of motion?  r/r it if so.  if all this is good, i bet you a nickel your gauge is bad.  you might try an independent ground wire to your gauge before buying a new one.

  3. The first step would be to attach a jumper wire from the ground stud on the back of the gauge to the sender stud also on the back of the gauge. When you turn the key on your gauge should peg. If it does it's good and if it doesn't the gauge is bad. You must also have 12v at the ignition stud(the only one left)when the key is on. If the gauge checks good then move the jumper wire to jump the studs on the sender, and if the gauge pegs when the key is on your wiring and gauge are both good. Finally, remove your sender, and move the arm with the wiring attached and the key on. If it moves the gauge and everything seems to be ok, your arm might be getting hung up inside the tank. Good luck.

  4. first take test light and attach to battery positive then touch light to gound wire on tank if it lights your ground is good .

then disconnect pink sender wire from sender ground it out with key on .If the gauge pegs to full then your wire going to the gauge and the sender are good.

You need a sender not worth repairing do new
