Gas Heat vs. Electric Heat?

I am buying a home and need to know disadvantages and advantages of heating and costs associated. I live in Columbus, Ohio.

  1. well, electric heat used to be a lot more expensive, but nowdays the cost is close to the same for mid efficiency systems. it's too cold up there for max efficiency from a heat pump, SO i would consider a high efficiency gas furnace. these units capture and condense the hot vent fumes that are typically exhausted theough the flu pipe and are about 98% efficient. they are really good systems! they get almost every available BTU  out of the incoming gas.

    another thing that's kind of cool about them is, you can actually use pvc for the flu piping because there is no heat left in the discharged vapors. THAT's EFFICIENT!


  2. I prefer gas. Cooking on a gas stove is much better than electric. Gas heat around us is cheaper and more efficient than electric.

    probably depends on what utilities you have and what your costs are.
