I'm curious about how your car tire contributes to gas mileage improvement.

  1. 1. If you drive 1000 miles a month (US national average), you'll save $576 annually if you keep your tires properly inflated. ($4 per gallon gasoline rate)

    2. Check your tire pressure in the morning or when it's cool & the car's not been used yet. Use a digital guage to get an accurate tire pressure reading. Do this at least once a month and you'll see 3 mpg extra on your fuel mileage.

    3. Here's a little-known tip -- Replace the air in your tires with nitrogen. Besides giving you 5 mpg more, it will also ensure that your tires stay at the right pressure longer.

  2. its called friction.. harder the tire the less drag is why you hear everyone say add air to your tires you will get better mileage

  3. Several ways a tire can affect gas mileage.  As the other posts have already mentioned, maintaining proper air pressure in all tires is one point.

Also, the type of rubber compounds and tread design also makes a difference.  If you have flexing in the rubber and tread, that increases rolling resistance.  Another factor is the width of the tire as this will affect the overall aerodynamics of the vehicle ( and also, again, the rolling resistance increases with a wider footprint ).
