Gas gauge honda? is this illegal?

I have a honda accord 1994 ex and the gas gauge broke and i really want the gas gauge to work so my parents are thinking about buying a different cluster...is it illegal? Im not trying to get introuble.

  2. No, it's not illegal to physically replace the dash cluster. There are ways to reset the new electronic ones to match the old mileage on the old ones. The mechanical ones rely on the "honesty" of the car owner to tell a new owner if it gets sold, but it is not illegal to replace it, only to change the mileage on the old one. It IS illegal to NOT tell someone that it has been replaced if it shows lower mileage! You're mis-representing the car at that point. But you can change it out as long as you record the mileage differences, and point it out at resale time. Then you're ok.

  3. Are you sure the gauge is bad? It could be the sending unit in the tank. Gauges are pretty long lived. Sending units are more likely to go bad. I'd do a bit of troubleshooting before I spent good money for a new cluster. If you ground the wire from the sending unit the gauge should indicate full. If it does then the sending unit s at fault.

  4.      More than likely it is the fuel tank sensor. rather than the gage on the dash.
