Question:

Gas may reach $10 a gallon!?

Analysts are estimating that gas may reach $10 a barrel in 2 to 3 years. Of course its almost $4 now, so I really doubt it would take that long. How would this affect you, how would this affect out country? What would happen to this great country?

  1. $10 a gallon would cause people to change the way they think, but it wouldn't be the end of the world.  We would just have to learn to adapt.  Hey - this world existed a long time without automobiles or dependence on oil.  So did this country.  We have trouble seeing out of our present glasses.

But, to answer your question.  If nothing else changed, and gas went up to $10 a gallon, I would say that we would be a lot smarter about driving.  I only live 2 miles from work, so I would definitely be riding my bike, as would my husband who only works about 10 from home.  We would be much smarter on our trips to the store, and we would probably be much cheaper in what we eat because food prices would be so much higher.  There would be a lot more people on welfare, because more people would lose their jobs, or they would just decide that they spend more money on gas getting to work than they make at work.  It would be hard, but I think we can make it!

  4. Not a chance it would ever hit 10 dollars no one would be able to afford it or yet anything transpored by it .. If this did happen the country would fall apart ..

  5. if it does we'll have to change our driving pratices for good. problem is, unlike europe, when we go somewhere, we might travel 100 miles in a day or more and that's not hard to do. but changing our vehicles and power to a less oil based system would be beneficial, just expensive to start.....

  6. $10 a barrel for gasoline? That is one h**l of a deal. That's about 24 cents a gallon if you're talking about a standard 42 gallon barrel. I know what you meant to say, but if you are going to be posting questions on a public forum, you better get it right.

  7. We would be ***** fuked, that's for sure.

  8. It would take some kind of catastrophe for it to hit 10 dollars in 2 or 3 years.

You're already seeing people drive less (when it's optional) and buying smaller cars.  Reduction in demand will stabilize or reduce the price, just like it did 30 years ago.

Of course, if the dollar continues to weaken, that might not matter.

And regardless, yeah, assuming there isn't massive deflation at any point (that's rare, so it isn't a big assumption), gas WILL eventually hit 10 dollars per gallon.  I just don't think it will be so quickly that you have to worry about it.

Oh, and if it hit 10 dollars per gallon in today's dollars, really quickly, the suburbs and rural areas would be ******.  It would be uneconomical for the people who have to live in far flung areas to work in city centers while living in far flung areas.  First you'd see the kind of pain that the low end of the economy suffers in southeast Alaska, where some of the wealthier communities suffer from "Aspenization," except with the complication that the service workers can't commute (no roads and/or no safe land to build on).  Then you'd see new development get more and more compact.  Then you'd see those vast cul-de-sac wastelands value plummet to the point that some of them would be razed to turn back into farmland, others razed to build more efficient housing.  You'd probably see medium-sized cities grow, and large ones shrink or stagnate, due to the difficulty in accommodating far-flung labor forces places like LA and Phoenix and the like...the smaller cities would be cheaper and offer more housing closer to workplaces.

Hopefully you'd see idiotic trends in zoning in the US die.  Mixed residential and commercial, for ****'s sake.

  9. ain't gonna happen.

Don't let the doomsayers ruin your day.

  10. All I know is when Bush took office Oil was $20 a barrel. Now it is $114 a barrel. The solution seems obvious to me. Time for a change. McClain will only be more of the same.

  11. It wouldn't really have an impact in my daily life as I have chosen to bike to work.  No gas, no insurance, no car payments!

Now my wife and kids would be cramped somewhat - I think we'd need to plan trips to the grocery store on the weekends together.  We could walk or ride together- it might make us all healthier in the long run anyway!

Actually it sounds like a paradise if I can be honest - less cars on the road, less pollution - manufacturers scrambling to provide electric, hybrid and alternative options... cities scrambling to meet the demand of public transit, bike paths and pedestrian safety... WOW!

Even private companies may be forced to relocate - closer to their workforce - and allow telecommutes rather than lose their workers!

Hey y'all jack up that price - it's gonna hurt a little and be inconvenient but I think in the long run we're all gonna be better off!

I'll be waiting for you in the bike lane.  We will survive this.

Hey IAN F - the very zoning you hate - or rather the lack thereof is what put us in this situation where everyone is so car dependent.  Good point - people need to be closer to their work.

  12. It would kick this county right where it needs kicking! There are alternative options out there to power these cars. The real problem is that there are just to many greedy people out there running our country. That is the only reason they won't let the needed changes to come. They are afraid they will not be able to s***w us anymore. If they allow new technology already available go into place. Do worry idiots i am sure you will find a way! It just seems silly that they have total electric cars in japan that go 90 miles and hour and in Europe mass transit is available everywhere and any where you want to go. But here in America all those rail systems are collecting rust and dust. Our cars are so pathetically designed that we do not even take advantage of inertia or gravity. My car will burn less fuel turned off and speed up down a hill but with it on it eats fuel and goes slower! I turn my car off on big hills and coast for miles at a time, but these stupid engineers have our cars burning more fuel down hill even if you let off the gas!

  13. the catastrophe is here

    peak oil occurred last year

  14. I didn't hear $10 but I did hear $7 in the next 2-3 years.

Well, it's already so hard for the majority of American's to scrape by on $4 a gallon.  I'm sure our employers have NO intention of giving us the same percentage of pay raises as percentage of the cost of living increases.

I have cut out SO much of the little extra's such as:

        Eating out

Buying more  full meal food.   Very few snacks....even the healthy snacks I've had to cut.  It cost MORE to eat as healthy as possible.

Try to stop on my home from work if I need ANYTHING as I'm 3-4 miles from all shops (grocery etc.)

Stopped going out for lunch.  Eat in and don't have to drive anywhere.

Now going to a cheap $15 hair cut place......which I hate because the last time the lady totalled screwed up and cu tmy hair 2 inches shorter on one side in the back!  Yes I got it fixed but NEVER had the happen at my $25 hair cutting place.

but you know.....I still have only about $20-$50 left in my checking account the day before every payday.  I have no savings.......can't..........I live on EVERYTHING I make!

  15. Don't worry about it untill it happens!
