I have a Westinghouse gas oven that doesn't light. The burners are working fine. There's no gas smell when I turn on the oven. Anything I can try to fix this? Can't find the manual. Thanks!

  1. I would need more information about the oven.Does it have electric igniters or pilot light? If it's electritic igniters,on most models you have to push in on the burner nob as you turn it.You should here a clicking sound,it's the igniter sparking,to light the burner. If it's a pilot type ,it will have a center point branching out to feed the burners. Some pilots have a thermocoupling on them so if the pilot goes out it shut the gas supply off.Try calling your local gas co.Some company will send out a service Tec. to check it out.

  2. If it's an old one, there's a pilot, a small flame that burns all the time. If it's newer, there's a mechanism that creates a spark electrically. Often, for the second one, you can hear it clicking while it's trying to fire.

Let's assume it's the pilot kind, the older one. The pilot must be lit. The safety mechanism for these is a thermocouple. When it's not being heated because the pilot's out, it cuts off the pilot gas supply. There is a button that bypasses the valve. It must he held down to force the pilot light gas flowing and held down until the thermocouple heats up, maybe 30 seconds, and holds the pilot on. It will be located below the oven. On a lot of them, you can reach it by removing the bottom storage door. Or, it can be under the bottom panel of the oven that lifts out. If you're on natural gas, the gas company will usually send someone by to help light it. The boom when you mess up is bad publicity for gas, so they do it.

If it's an electrical mechanism, it may have failed and would have to be replaced. It's a pro repair job for you.
