I want to replace my electric stove with a gas version.

I have a pipe near the back of the stove with a valve on it.

How can I tell if gas is present when I open the valve?

  1. if there is gas to that valve that you can see, and there is no cap on the valve, then all you have to do is open up for a second and you will smell gas. Sometimes though. there is a second or even third valve under that further down line to prevent gas leaks in case of accidental opening, and at the "drip leg" of the gas line. Go in your crawl space, or basement and follow it down line. If you are on a slab you can look in the attic above the stove or at the gas manifold ( if you have one ). Sometimes if the stove is your only gas appliance it might be shut off outside at the gas meter. The shut off at the meter will be perpendicular to the pipe and usually have a hole on the valve latch, so it can be locked. That about covers all possibilities for gas valves.

  2. make sure there is no cap on line and turn valve on if its under pressure you will know in a second-make sure no open flames around-be no harm done if you shut it off immediately
