  1. I find the best gas prices in town by using the Gas Price Watch website.

The prices are posted by volunteer spotters.  The time the price was posted is displayed under the price so you can tell if it is current.

  2. I remember a couple of years ago gas hit 100 dollars a barrel and gas barely tipped 3 bucks a gallon so my question is why now at the same price per barrel is it higher? and why are we so dependent on foregin oil when we have enough fuel here in our own country to last over a hundred years? I can answer those simply. our president... he owns oil rigs in texas and i assume that he knows he's not going to be over things anymore so he better hurry up and fatten his pockets one more time

  3. Hi,

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones because the price of gas doesn't really bother me any more.

About 2 months ago I found the strangest website that explained how you could run your car (or any vehicle for that matter) on a mixture of gas and water. As you would expect, I initially dismissed it as complete rubbish but when I bumped into a friend that had converted his car and doubled his miles per gallon I decided to take a look.

I'm no mechanic but still managed to convert my Subaru in about two hours. I'm stunned that just plain water can make this difference but my engine now not only runs much quieter but gives me around 33 miles per gallon instead of the 26 I was getting before!   It's just like gas prices have dropped by 26%!

  4. Supply and demand.  In addition, different gas stations buy from different refineries.

  5. Prices vary based on local competition.  Gas stations that are near a freeway, in a richer area, or further away from other gas stations can charge more.

  6. Market variability.  Sales reps may feel they want to focus on moving more product in one area.  If the station is privately owned, the owner may be battling with another station nearby and dropping his prices to where he's making nothing on gasoline.  Sometimes if we get in a supply crunch, we will move prices to slow or speed up sales, depending on our needs.

In the case of our company, dealers can get volume discounts which they pass along to the consumer.  Also, depending on class of trade, a brand may have retail stations it operates while some other stations may be operated by a wholesaler who will drive hundreds of miles to save a couple cents a gallon, which can be passed along to the consumer.

chelle, lay off the hallucinogens, darlin'.  We're in record territory for crude oil, two years ago it was around $50-60 a barrel.

Finding low prices?  In addition to the sites others mentioned, I use gasbuddy.com and MSN Autos has a gas price page that is zip code driven.  Just google it.

  7. Cost of transporting it.  The farther away the gas station is from the refinery, the more gas it costs to transport it and that cost is passed on to the consumer through higher gas prices.  Hence the reason why the gas at my in-laws is always about 10 cents more than it is in the city.
