Question:

Gas prices...what are you doing about it?

Everyone is complaining but I haven't seen much evidence of change among drivers. On the highway, cars are still driving 70-80 miles, people are still driving SUV's and gas guzzlers and I haven't noticed anyone in my town walking more. I'm just curious if the gas prices have slowed anybody here down? I've stopped speeding and if I need to go somewhere within walking distance...I walk.

If you have tried to cut back on your gas use, in what ways have you changed? I'm hoping for some more ideas. :)

  1. I have a wife and 4 kids, 2 of whom have special needs.  This unfortunately means that I own a Chevrolet Suburban.  As much as I would like to do away with the nasty gas guzzling brute, it is the only vehicle that fits all of our needs.  That being said, my wife and I are doing a much better job of planning our errands.  Before, we used to just run in and out whenever needed.  Now we plan all of the days errands and make sure we complete them in the shortest distance.  We go out once for the day and if we forget something, it waits until we  go out again.  It has helped quite a bit and is actually also saving time.

  2. I take the bus and save $250 a month in gas and parking.

  3. i sold my biggest gas user and now have all smaller vehicles,i only had one that was bad on gas though, and we cut down on diving a lot,we now make one trip do everything now days, and will continue to do so,it cost me a 100 bucks to fill up a small truck so we have to make every trip count as much as possible,if everyone does the same it will help some,i don't own nothing now that gets less than 23 miles to the gallon, hopefully that will help some, good luck.

  4. I am taking more advantage of mass transit in NYC. For places I used to drive to, now I would do a careful research and found out the way by train, subway, or even bus. Biking sounds good too, but still it is not safe to do in most places. For destinations, such as grocery stores, post office, and restaurants, within a mile, I would just take a walk. It is still hard to avoid driving to go outside of the city. I am hoping the rising up of gas price may drive train lines to be extended, stations to be added, and service to be improved.

  5. Even if all they do is just drive a little less that means maybe 1 or 2 gallons saved.  Figure 200 million people that's 400 million of gallons of gasoline NOT used.  I don't see how the oil companies not feel that!!

  6. well, for one i dont drive around looking for work, i sit in here looking on craigslist, applying online. other than that, i just dont drive much except  to get to an interview.

  7. I'm writing my representatives and telling them to support new drilling and new refineries.   It will help in the short term until we figure out a new source of fuel or get people to switch over to a different type of vehicle, which doesn't happen overnight.  Right now we are just throwing money at every idea out there, a lot of which are not any better.

By drilling for more oil now and increasing our refining capabilities we will improve our domestic production and reduce prices in the short term until a new fuel can come into widespread use or a large segment of the population can switch over to an alternative type of car.  Technology now will allow us to drill much safer with a greatly reduced risk of spills or harming the environment.

  8. I sold both are SUVs, we only have one car now HYBRID, 4 seater smart car, and a motor cycle... hows that....

Soon I would guess the gas co. will feel the impact...

  9. id rather ride a bike than to waste and burn gas that will kill us all and save money in the end

  10. I carpool now 2-3 days a week. It has helped.  We switch off on who drives.

  11. use solar batteries..for heating up the water/car run/etc..

    use peddles..

    carpool

    Public transport systems etc..

  12. I own a 12 mpg gas guzzler full size pick up truck

I am suffering and waiting it out, I figure everybody else will make a stupid decision and buy a small, unsafe tin can car that gets 45 mpg and then gas prices will go down and all those stupid people that purchased that worthless small car will be stuck with it, making payments and hating it, and these people will be watching me driving my full size truck and wishing they were me!   ha ha ha !
