Question:

Gas smell from vintage brass lamp?

I have recently purchased an old brass lamp with glass shade. It works fine but there is a gap between the fitting and the shade. I have noticed a smell (like gas) coming from the fitting when it is on. Can anyone please lend any ideas what this smell might be and if it is harmful (it is not an electrical burning smell but more of a gas). Thanks.

  1. Could be old PCB and asbestos based insulation -- enjoy the cancer.

  2. It may have been a kerosene lamp.  Kerosene over a long time can leave a film that will smell.  It could possibly have a little kerosene in it ( but unlikely ).  Be sure that the fitting is closed and gently shake it ( secure the shade - or remove it ) and hear if there is a sloshing sound in it.  There should not be, but you never know.

That it had been used for years as a keorsene lamp would leave enough film that will leave a smell.
