Question:

Gas tips when filling up gas at the gas station? How to take advantage of the gas station?

How to make the biggest bang for my wallet? Some tips I heard was to never fill your gas full because the gas needs to expand. Another tip I heard was SLOWLY pump the gas rather than maximizing the pump to get more gas. I mean maybe it won't make a difference with us noticing, but every little things do add up in the long run with gas hoovering around $4 a gallon. Are these tips true? I noticed when I pump gas, if you hold the lever at a constant grip, and when the $ meter stops, I still feel gas pumping into my tank very little.

Last question, does leaving your gas near empty hurts your engine since debris is at the bottom of the tank?

  1. really the only tip that I can give you where you will get a little more gas is to get all the remaining gas out of the nozzle. But this is very little. The tip about pumping slowly is PARTIALLY true. When you pump gas the gas bubbles and the faster you pump the more bubles are created, these bubbles take up space and will shut the pump of earlier. If you pump it in slowly you will pump in more gas before it shuts off. If you do not believe me try this, go grab a glass and fill it up with water with the tap turned on all the way, when you see bubbles reach the top turn it off then look at how low the water is in the glass, now do the same thing but turn on the tap only half way then turn it off when the bubbles reach the top. You should notice it is much higher then it was when you had the tap turned on all the way, Same thing happens when you pump gas. Sorry for the long read

EDIT: When I was working today I thought of another one. Its kind of hard to explain, is EXTREMELY difficult to do and you do not get much extra gas by doing this but take advantage of the rounding the pump does. You can make the last few decimals that tell you how much you pumped move with out changing the price. But as I said this is extremely difficult and you only get about one more drop of gas but as you said "it all adds up"

  2. The pump at the station is very accurate at whatever delivery speed you want. When the pump shuts off the shut off is inside the pump housing and any small portion that runs down the hose has already been counted. You should not fill your tank, top off as they say, any more after the auto shut off. Never run below 1/4 tank as if you run it too far down you will get air in the injection system and it will shut the engine down. There is no profit in trying to cheat.

  3. Rob them

  4. You can't cheat the pump. You could suck up some crud from the bottom of your tank, but it is not very likely. I always get gas when I get to a 1/4 of a tank.

  5. You should never force gasoline into the tank. Modern gas pumps are designed to shut off after the tank is full. The fuel vapor in the tank will expand as the car heats up and if you have an older car, this could start a leak in a rusty tank. I wouldn't store my car for more than a week at a time without a full tank because outside heat can cause moisture buildups along the tank walls causing rust. For storage longer than that i would recommend that you buy a fuel additive at you local automotive store like Sta-Bil fuel stabilizer. If you feel compelled to top off the tank, it is safe to pull up on the lever and hold it until it shuts off. I do this now because sometimes the pump will shutoff because the latch comes loose. Hope this helps.

  6. I don't know about that pumping stuff, but I DO know that you don't need to worry about the c**p in the bottom of your tank. There is a screen at the pump to catch the larger crud and then an in line filter cleans all the rest.

I run my tank down to the point where I'm running on fumes almost every time and have had NO PROBLEM YET after 98,000 miles.

(of course, it's a Toyota, so that probably helps)
