  1. Premium fuel is reccommended for the Eclipse GT.  The compression of the engine requires it.

You could use regular 87 octane fuel in the car, but your power will suffer.  You will feel a difference as the engine adjusts to the lower octane, but if you ever hear your engine knocking, you have to switch back to premium so that you dont damage your engine.

All in all, it is best to stick with premium, the car is designed to run on premium.

  2. I had this same question when I bought my 07 spyder GT so I talked to an engine expert and here is what he told me.  If the owners manual tells you to use Premium then thats what you should use, the engine compression is set up that way.  Every once in a while using the middle grade won't hurt but you may get some knocking, your fuel mileage will definitely suffer and you will lose power.  People want to save money by using regular but if that decreases your MPG then you're really not saving.  He also told me that if you used regular grade often then eventually you will damage the engine.  For an extra few dollars per fill up, its better to be safe then sorry, plus you want the awesome MIVEC power.
