Gateway MX 6440 laptop

Question

I checking a gateway MX 6440 laptop for a friend. It will not power up. I have checked the adapter with a volt meter and it works. I removed the hard drive and tested it in another computer and it works. The battery is new but doesn't seem to charge.

I'm taking a wild guess and saying the motherboard is dead. Does anyone else have any ideas.

The computer was one month out of warranty. When it died it was powered on and then apparently shut down and that was all she wrote.
